WE Charity: A Brief History
Craig Kielburger was a 12 year old Canadian boy when he founded WE Charity. The organization began in 1995 under the name “Free the Children.” Its mission is to eradicate child labor, and advocate for the rights of children worldwide. Kielburger’s motivation to take action was fueled by an inspiring newspaper story about a Pakistani young child worker who had been killed after speaking up against oppressive work practices. Kielburger was inspired to act by a newspaper article about a young Pakistani child labor activist who had been killed for speaking out against oppressive labor practices.
WE Charity currently operates in nine nations, including Kenya and India. The charity also has a presence in Ecuador and Haiti.
Model WE Villages: Sustainable Community Development
WE Charity is based on the WE Villages, an integrated and sustainable development model that addresses the root causes behind poverty. It is built around five key pillars – Education, Water Health Food and Opportunity. WE Charity’s holistic approach to these key areas has allowed it to bring about lasting changes in many communities around the world.
Education We Charity believes in education as the cornerstone for social change. It builds schools, provides teachers with training and educational resources so that all children, but especially girls, have access to a quality education. It has allowed thousands of children to get a good education and start a brighter future.
Clean Water Accessing clean water for the health of people and their economic growth is vital. WE Charity implements clean water projects including the construction of wells and provision of sanitation facilities. This reduces waterborne illnesses and gives women and kids more time to concentrate on their education and jobs.
WE Charity, by improving access to healthcare and empowering communities in their control of health, has been able to reduce the number of preventable illnesses.
Nutrition: Through sustainable farming, school gardens and agriculture education, food security programs provide communities with nutritious foods. The programs not only help fight malnutrition and build up self-sufficient community, they also promote sustainable farming practices.
Opportunities: Economic empowerment programmes provide adults with skill training, microloans and financial literacy in order to create new revenue opportunities. The goal of this pillar is to create long-term independence in the economy and reduce reliance upon external aid.
WE Charity works closely with communities to empower them and ensure that their efforts are culturally and environmentally relevant. This approach, which is community-led, has produced tangible long-term results.
The Youth Empowerment Program: Building Leaders of Tomorrow

This program offers students and educators resources, workshops, campaigns, and other tools to help them address social issues, such as bullying and mental health.

It has grown into a culture phenomenon, with thousands of teachers, celebrities and students coming together each year to support social action. WE Day’s inspiring speakers, activists, and musicians encourage youth to work for social justice.
